THE STATE OF AFFAIRS OF SAINT DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH – DECEMBER 2016

Since the May 2016 Assembly, we have been blessed with phenomenal events that have enriched our spiritual and educational programs in this beautiful Parish of Saint Demetrios. We witnessed a wonderful graduation for our Schools and we are very proud of our young students advancing in their academic and religious education. In 2016, we had 153 students in our Church School, who took full advantage of our weekly sermons for the youth, great lesson plans from their wonderful teachers, a prosforon and a kolyva retreats, Saturday of Lazarus retreat and confessions, Oratorical Festival seminar on public speaking and the actual Festival and a gorgeous Christmas pageant. We also offer continued adult religious education with Bible studies, Marriage seminars, Seminars for People New to the Faith and monthly lectures that have started since October with great success. The first presentation was on The Faith and Raising Children and the second one was Faith and Anger. These PowerPoint dialectic lectures with discussion are an excellent way to engage our families in continuous religious education on contemporary issues that affect us all.

Greek School had a fantastic year again with our students excelling in their regents State examinations year after year and several wonderful events being added with great success, such as the Christmas and Apokries events. We also had the 3 Hierarchs, March 25th and October 28th celebrations and an amazing parade. Little Angels continues their weekly meetings and scheduled outings with enormous efficiency and we are very thankful to Panagiota Roumbos and Stephanie Margaronis for their dedicated efforts to introduce new families and our wonderful children to the Church from an early age.

Philoptochos had another fantastic year with many successful events and after the Fashion Show they had their first Health and Beauty Day, as well as many causes they contributed to. They also pledged to assist with the Community Center, which is the great vision of our Parish. Pins for Pauly broke all previous years’ records with tremendous attendance for the Annual event with over 300 people and more families assisted than ever before. HOPE and JOY completed a fantastic year and we now welcome two phenomenal ladies to lead the organization, Helen Kovoros and Antigoni Michaels. We are having weekly soccer and sports practices, game nights, outings, theater days, sports and dances.

GOYA also concluded an amazing year with the Olympics and welcomed new directors, Silvenna Karantenislis and Michelle Hatzizacharias. They are very enthusiastic and they compliment this organization with a mix of fun and philanthropic activities. We thank the previous directors who were outstanding and who also assisted in the transition for this great youth organization. Volleyball practices have started with coach Niko and Vanessa. They are fun and I love attending them. Last week I was with our Youth at Laser Bounce and Friendly’s and tonight we are making meals for the homeless. Nikoleta Markoulis became our new YAL director and has started wonderful events for the Young Adults of the Church. Golden Years have approximately 30 members and they organize their monthly meetings as well as helping the Parish with beautification projects.

We also had a fantastic time at the Annual Picnic at Eisenhower Park and the trip to Saint Basil’s Academy, up-State NY, with hiking, sports and BBQ. Panaghia’s was again very fulfilling spiritually with daily Paraklesis service for the 15 days, confessions and the feast celebration with a wonderful luncheon. We have instituted frequent lunches or breakfasts after the services and all Parishioners enjoy the company, the music and the delicious food.

Saint Demetrios feast was again amazing. His Eminence Geron of the Archdiocese Demetrios presided at the Great Vespers with many priests present and a beautiful reception offered by Philoptochos. I was also elected as the president of the Long Island Clergy Fellowship and Philoptochos already assisted with our first meeting. Another responsibility that I gladly undertook was to run the Parish Council Candidates’ Seminars, 2 of them in Long Island and Queens. In September, we were blessed to receive the new Templon, the icon screen of the sanctuary, which is gorgeous with unique wood-carved art and iconography. The templon icons are still progressing, as other icons in the Church, with this project nearing completion. As I am typing these lines, the new portico of the church hall is being constructed and it looks truly beautiful. It is our wish to also find a donor for the Church Hall so that it can be completed soon and the proceeds from such donation can also assist our Center. The Church looks outstanding already, but these last details are a reason for excitement.

We also had the addition of a state-of-the-art sound system for our Church Hall. This system is fully integrated with the Nave of the Church, so that services can be broadcasted downstairs or via the internet. Also, it allows for us to have our School and Youth events, lectures, presentations and dances with an all-inclusive system. It even includes provisions for instruments for a live band and a smart TV for access to internet based resources. I am using all this technology for various lectures as well as to DJ fun events, which we already had with great success. PowerPoint presentations are easy and we had a fun costume party for JOY and a dance for GOYA.

Of course, none of these things are free. We offer these services for the benefit of our Youth and our Parishioners, but all these hardware and construction projects come at a cost. As we speak, there are few funds in the account, treasurer Niko Poulikidis will give the full report at the Assembly. You see, if we did not built the portico, the beautiful new doors would be destroyed. If we did not change the destroyed sound system of the Hall after the fire, we would have to hire a DJ for every single event of the School and the Youth. These are one time investments and we collect the benefits with spiritual and fellowship programs for us and our families.

This year we have already 356 paid stewards (last year we had 324). The total Stewardship collected is $167,377, which amounts to $470 per family. Obviously, it will be impossible to sustain an entire Church with such a limited offering. The annual budget includes all utilities for Church, office and School, maintenance for this huge edifice, salaries for clergy, secretaries, chanters and custodian, insurance, Archdiocese commitment, charities, repairs, office supplies, architectural fees, permits etc. The minimum stewardship is $500 for family, less for senior citizens and singles. Please, do not make the minimum required the maximum offered. We are trailing all other denominations and religions in stewardship offering, we need to understand that the Church in America is not sustained by the government as in Greece. The Church belongs to all of us and the Church is the most important inheritance we offer to our children.

Another inheritance is going to be the Center. We had to postpone the Hearing for purposes of renewing and improving our application and the file we submitted for approval. The new date for the Hearing at the Town of Hempstead is March 8 at 2 pm. The full report will be presented by the architect at the General Assembly. In the meantime, I would like to announce that in the year 2016 we had 2 adult Chrismations, 2 adult baptisms (4 adults came to the faith), 35 baptisms, 12 funerals and 7 weddings. We anticipate until the end of the year a few more families to be added so that we can have more than 360 stewards in the Church. Please, spread the word to everyone you know to become a Church Steward. It is not fair for some to sustain the Church and others to use it without contributing for it. Let’s do the best we can to fill our Church every Sunday and for every event. Have a blessed Advent Season and a Christ centered Christmas!

Mr. Tommy Zervas made a motion to accept the minutes, seconded by Mr. Peter Louca (annexed hereto is a copy of the Assembly minutes dated December 6, 2015 in English as Schedule “A”).

V. Pastor’s Presentation:

Greetings to all our faithful and God-loving Parish members. The purpose of this communication is to deliver the Church State of Affairs for our beloved Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Since the last Assembly, we had a fantastic Christmas Pageant, which was greatly missed in the past 3 years because of the fire, a great Epiphany celebration with our young divers retrieving the Cross from the frigid waters, 3 Hierarchs event, Godparents’ Sunday, Parade, Lenten services, Bible studies, confessions, hospital visits, charity events, a great Fish Luncheon for Palm Sunday, an unforgettable Holy Week, Magiritsa after the Paschal service and a phenomenal Pins for Pauly, Philoptochos Fashion Show, Olympics and Schools’ graduations. All these were augmented by being back in our splendid Church.

The Church has turned out indeed glorious and improvements take place daily. Look around you in our Church: gorgeous state-of-the-art lighting with traditional chandeliers, energy efficient LED illumination, environmentally conscious provisions for better insulation, double thermally insulated Byzantine style windows, outstanding Mahogany doors and pews, magnificent ecclesiastical items and better HVAC, marble flooring with mosaics, granite courtyard with expanded balconies, improved Bell tower, roof, Church Hall, kitchen, bathrooms and sound system. New additions include a comfortable Baby room, an elevator, new porticoes, staircases, railings, icons and, in a few months, a gorgeous iconostasis that divides the Altar from the Nave of the Church.

We are very thankful to all our volunteers. Our Parish Council is organizing a beautiful Festival with live music and delicious sweets. Thanks to all the Festival volunteers who tirelessly commit their love for the Church. I am very thankful to all Church organizations. Our Church School teachers and board who come every Sunday to teach our children for free, preparing lesson plans and activities. Our talented and proficient Greek School Board, PTA and teachers who are all outstanding. The wonderful ladies of our Philoptochos who help those who need our love and assistance. The volunteers of the Golden Years who are indeed with a golden heart. The members of our YAL, who meet on Fridays and participate in Festivals and other fundraisers to help the Church. The advisors of GOYA who have put together a great ministry for our children. The director and volunteers of HOPE and JOY who meet frequently with great activities and functions. The advisors of Little Angels who have weekly meetings with amazing crafts, playtime and activities for our youngest friends. The volunteers of Pins for Pauly who have assisted over 320 children stricken with Leukemia.

A personal thanks is owed to our Parish Council and Executive Board, starting with our President Theoni Anagnostou. She was even surprised to be nominated few months ago. She is surrounded by a very energetic and talented executive board and our wonderful Parish Council who are offering their time and love for the Church.

I need to express a heartfelt thanks to Kostas Piyis who is maintaining our beautiful Church and makes sure the door stays open for all services and events. He was instrumental in the renovation project and even the clean up after the fire. A big thanks to our talented and melodious chanters, Andoni and Strato. My gratitude cannot be put to words for my left and right hands: kyria Georgia and kyria Irene in the office. They are unbelievable and people should know how much they do, from an entire Calendar and Journal, to making sure that all the spiritual needs of our Parishioners are met. We have a policy in the office, always respond to all people fast, for any inquiry and especially pastoral emergencies. We have synchronized all operations. We have a state-of-the-art Website, a generous donation of John Varsamis and THE WEB EMPIRE. Parishioners are subscribed to a listserver thanks to which you all receive this and other weekly messages and communications. We print our own service books for various feasts of the year, our Champion Newsletter, our Journal and Calendar in the office. We maintain our own website. We have a YouTube and a Facebook page that are updated frequently with news and events of the Church. By all of the above we save the Church significant funds which can be allocated for the growth and progress of the Parish.

We are thankful to have our own volunteers paint, decorate and maintain for everyday operations. I encourage you all to be part of something greater than each one of us individually, something that will leave a positive mark to our lives and the lives of others. Most importantly, we need all Parishioners to be actively involved in all our functions and events. So far we had free of charge a steak luncheon for Panaghia’s, a free picnic with BBQ and games and a free 5 star luncheon for the reopening of the Church. We also have retreats, events for the Youth, for parents, families, Young Adults and our senior citizens. Niko and Vanessa are coaching our Volleyball teams and our GOYA advisors, Eleni, Debbie, Dimitra and Nicole, are organizing events and helping our Church teams be represented in the Olympics and other Cups and athletic competitions.

Our services and spiritual retreats are the most wonderful part of expressing our faith in this community. Your stewardship is not an entrance fee to a club, but your way of saying thank you to God for all that He gives you and thanks to your Church for being there for us in times of joy and in times of need. Here in Saint Demetrios we have become friends for life, our children will have an extended family for the rest of their lives and a spiritual guide to be their compass for every significant decision. We want you all to be part of something great, because our Church would not be great if it was not for you. Thanks to all of you!

VI. President’s Report:

The President, Mr. Theoni Anagnostou thanked everyone for a beautiful Easter this year.   She acknowledged that the community would need to work just as hard to have a successful festival week.

VII. Treasurer’s Report:

The treasurer, Mr. Nick Poulikidis, gave the report annexed hereto as Schedule “B”.  The attached report reflects the months January 2016-May 2016. The community received many donations for pews, icons and ecclesiastical items, but financially, we are a little lower than we should be.  We have to work hard for a successful festival to help carry us financially through the year.

VIII. Church Restoration:

The church restoration was completed in time for Holy Week. The church is still having work being done on its icons, and there are still some minor touch ups that still need to be done

IX. Organization Reports:

Philoptochos: Patricia Boultadakis, President, presented her report through Mrs. Theoni Anagnostou.  St. Barbara’s Philoptochos is a philanthropic organization that fundraises to help families in need and various charitable organizations as well as St. Demetrios Church.   A summary of their activities is annexed hereto as Exhibit C.

         Sunday School: Mrs. Cynthia Golding, Director, presented her report annexed hereto as Schedule “D”;

         Greek School; There was no representative from Greek School present to give a report;

Golden Years: Mrs. Irene Matthews, the Golden Years advisor, reported that the group has 30 members.  They try to meet once a month where a meal is served, they eat and play bingo.  The group does various fundraisers throughout the year.  This year they didn’t have a facility to meet on a regular basis, but they still managed to raise money.  Mrs. Matthews ended with thanking the Parish Council for all of their hard work in the church renovation project.

GOYA: Mr. Michael Mantikas presented his report annexed hereto as Exhibit E

JOY: There was no representative from JOY present to give a report.

Little Angels: There was no representative from Little Angels present to give a report.

Pins for Pauly: Mrs. Georgia Pavlou presented her report annexed hereto as Exhibit F

X. Old Business:

Community Center:  There is a new building code which reduces the number of parking spots required for the size of the building we are creating.  Many changes were done to the original plans in order to get us a better chance on getting approved. The upcoming variance hearing was going to be adjourned to give us more time to submit additional plans.

XI. New Business:

         A. Festival: The festival chairperson, Mr. Nick Poulikidis, reported that the festival is the main income of the church; therefore, everyone must step up and make the festival a success.  Last year, the festival income was lower due to increment weather, and it affected the budget for the entire year.  All organizations need to support the festival.  The festival was only going to run for one week this year. The hearing was scheduled for May 25, 2016 to obtain permits for it. The festival will be advertised with posters, Cosmos FM radio, Athena FM radio, and placemats for diners. Everyone MUST support the festival!!!

XII. Closing Prayer:

Mr. Tommy Zervas made a motion to close the Assembly seconded by Mr. Joseph Rocco.  Father Nikiforos offered the closing prayer at 9:02 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Joseph D. Rocco

Secretary of the General Assembly

Church State of Affairs – December 2015

Greetings to all our faithful and God-loving Parish members.

Since our last General Assembly meeting, our Church was still a construction zone. We were preparing for our Festival and several significant religious feasts and we were eager to see the final look of our beautiful Sanctuary. It is with joy and honor that we have announced that this time has come. The Church was completed in September, only 2 weeks after our unofficial deadline, as set at the last Assembly. We would love to have opened much earlier, but several items are custom made and this is not a usual renovation where one can just go to Home Depot and pick up ecclesiastical items, custom lighting fixtures and Byzantine style windows. Our Archbishop, His Eminence Demetrios, Geron of the Archdiocese of America, presided at the ceremony for the official re-opening on Sunday, October 25th. The service is on YouTube at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gzr7DZzNrgw

We are all moved and inspired by this beautiful service and the way His Eminence addressed us with pride for the wonderful outcome of the renovation. During the service, he was astounded by the Church adornments, the spectacular organization, the chanting and the stellar work with which Council, Philoptochos and all organizations welcomed him and hosted the reception. The service included the elevation to the rank of the reader for our seminarian Alexandros Avgeris and a surprise, my elevation to the rank of Protopresbyter, the higher office for a married priest.

The Church was indeed glorious and improvements take place daily. Look around you in our Church: gorgeous state-of-the-art lighting with traditional chandeliers, energy efficient LED illumination, environmentally conscious provisions for better insulation, double thermally insulated Byzantine style windows, outstanding Mahogany doors and pews, magnificent ecclesiastical items and better HVAC, marble flooring with mosaics, granite courtyard with expanded balconies, improved Bell tower, roof, Church Hall, kitchen, bathrooms and sound system. New additions include a comfortable Baby room, a soon to be delivered elevator, new porticoes, staircases, railings, icons and, in a few months, a gorgeous iconostasis that divides the Altar from the Nave of the Church.

Despite the limitations of serving in a basement and an outside tent for 2 years and 2 months, we were blessed with several sacraments and moments that brought us closer to the Church and made us participants in amazing events and services. We have more than 320 families as contributing stewards as of this morning (plus additional memberships that will be fulfilled by the end of the year) and we extend an invitation to all the supporters of Saint Demetrios to become active in stewardship by donating time, talent and treasure for the glory of God. Our Church celebrated in 2015 21 baptisms and 11 adult chrismations welcoming a total of 32 souls into the faith. We had 9 weddings and unfortunately 10 funerals. We believe that now that the Church is completed and so wonderfully done, more people will become active members and supporters and also participate in services and sacraments.

We are very thankful to all our volunteers. Our Parish Council organized a beautiful Festival despite the limitation of not having kitchen facilities ready in time. All the guests I spoke to expressed that our food is outstanding, the service is superb, people do not have to wait long for their order, the live music and the sweets were unbelievable and this is indeed one of the most wonderful Festivals they have attended. Thanks to all the Festival volunteers who tirelessly commit their love for the Church.

In the Summer I was able to supervise the delivery of the ecclesiastical items from Greece during a very difficult time for the country and when the austerity measures and capital controls were implemented. Seeing our containers leaving the port and blessing them before they embarked to cross the Atlantic was an emotional experience. I was blessed to see the manufacturing of all items that grace and adorn our gorgeous Church. I had a preview of what you now see as a final view. Nevertheless, I was even ecstatic and in awe when everything came together. We were almost ready for Panaghia’s, but only a few permits away from final reopening of the Church and some minor items that needed to be installed for proper code adherence. I was as impatient as a child on Christmas Eve… Now, the wait is over, I enjoy every service to the fullest. In less than 2 years I saw my house and Church destroyed, now, I can attest that I love them and I will never take them for granted. Neither will I take you for granted, my beloved and dear Parish members.

A personal thanks is owed to our Parish Council and Executive Board, starting with our President Peter Skenderis. He was even surprised to be nominated 4 years ago, not knowing that he would be serving for so long and during such a challenging time for the Parish. As he had supervised the delivery and installation of a new HVAC system, new icons and some renovations, he left for vacation in 2013 and received the news of the fire from abroad. Since then, many weekly meetings went by. He dealt with the insurance, which is his area of expertise, and saved our Church a lot of money thanks to his persistence to do what is best for the Church. He is surrounded by a very talented Council. Appointing new architects in the midst of a renovation, interviewing construction companies, overseeing the progress of the repairs and dealing with contracts and agreements from local companies all the way to factories in Greece was not part of the initial “job description.” It was a job fulfilled with great success and for the benefit of the Parish.

Pete Luca and Nick Stathopoulos, the 2 Vice Presidents, are here almost on a daily basis. Sometimes behind the scenes they do the work that people do not know, but that work is of paramount importance. Pete was awarded the Archdiocese medal of Saint Paul this year. This is the highest award in the Archdiocese that reflects on work Pete has done for patriotic issues, for the Cyprus tragedy and for dedicated volunteering to his Parish and our people in general. In the last years, he escorts a delegation that visits the President of the United States on Greek Independence day and the next day he takes off the tie and puts on the work clothes to clean and cook for the Church. In the same spirit is our dear Nick Stathopoulos, always under the radar, but I would be remiss not to thank him for his example of dedication and love for the Parish. He made an amazing kitchen for us and he is currently helping with the renovation of our storage areas.

Our Executive Board is also comprised of treasurer John Michaels, who oversees the financial dealings of the Church, a job that was extremely demanding due to the recent renovations. Theoni Anagnostou is our secretary and also heading the Design Committee that directed the beautiful coordination of all ecclesiastical items and decorative elements in the Church. It was 2 years ago that we first met in her house with the proposed drawings for pews (about 15 different samples of wood, design schematics and layout options). That was the first meeting and since then so much was accomplished to reach this great result. She is also our Assembly Secretary for the minutes attached to this presentation.

Currently we are updating our technological infrastructure, with a state of the art website that will be unveiled very soon. Parishioners are subscribed to a listserver thanks to which you all receive this and other weekly messages and communications. We print our own service books for various feasts of the year, our Champion Newsletter, our Journal and Calendar in the office. We maintain our own website.

There are still some icons that need to found a donor and other areas where your love can find an outlet.

General Assembly Minutes

Thursday, June 4, 2015

48 Members Present

  1. I.Opening Prayer: The President of the Parish Council, Mr. Peter Skenderis, called the General Assembly to order at 7:25 pm. Father Nikiforos offered the opening prayer.
  1. II.Selection of the Chairperson:

III. Selection of Secretary: The Chairperson opened the floor for nominations for a secretary. Mrs. Stephany Margaronis nominated Mrs. Theoni Anagnostou, seconded by Mr. Peter Louca; Mrs. Anagnostou accepted.

IV. Reading of the Minutes:   The minutes from the December 5, 2014 Assembly were read in English. The chairman, Mr. Poulikidis asked for any corrections in the minutes. None were made. Mr. Nikos Sarantakos made a motion to accept the minutes in English, seconded by Mrs. Matrona Katsouras. The minutes in English were passed. It was decided unanimously to forego reading the minutes in Greek (annexed hereto is a copy of the Assembly minutes dated December 5, 2014 in English and Greek as Schedule “A”).

V. Pastor’s Presentation:

Father Nikiforos welcomed everyone to the General Assembly meeting.

  • Father began by stating that it was a beautiful year. There were Sacraments scheduled despite the fact that the main Church is not yet ready and we have been blessed to include many adult baptisms and chrismations for faithful who are welcomed in the faith. So far, we have had 9 adults enter our Church this year, with some more to follow in the next months. All receive proper instruction and are joyful to participate in our wonderful spiritual experience.
  • With regards to Stewardship: in 2014 our community had 341 families as stewards which brought in an income of $145,391.00. This averages $414.00 per family ($145,391 /341). As of June 1, 2015, we have 199 families as stewards which brought in an income of $94,993.00. This averages $477.00 per family ($94,993/199). It appears we may be exceeding 2014’s stewardship numbers and possibly meeting our goal of 400 families. We all need to approach a friend/family member and urge them to be a giver of the church and not just a taker. This is a great sign for the community.
  • Father spoke about the events of the last months, including the feasts, seminars, Bible studies and services. He thanked President Skenderis for printing a beautiful Calendar, he announced the development of the Journal and presented the Champion which also communicates news to the Parishioners. He also spoke about our website with statistics on visitors from and about our new listserver which allows Parishioners to subscribe and receive weekly news and updates. He also stated that all this work is free, since we do it in the office, including printing of service books, layout of Journals and Calendars, designing and updating the website and listserver as well as the printing of the Champion.
  • Father stated that Holy Week was beautiful this year and Father thanked everyone for attending. He was very happy with the participation of our Youth in the Olympics and the Pins for Pauly and he congratulated our volunteers for their splendid example of Christian values and dedication. He anticipated that very soon we will be celebrating liturgy in our new church.

VI. President’s Report:

The President, Mr. Peter Skenderis, started his presentation with Epiphany 2015. Epiphany services were held on January 6, 2015. After the liturgy, Alexandros Avgeris retrieved the cross that was thrown into the waters. The annual Greek Independence Day parade was well attended by the community. Pins for Pauly held the annual bowl-a-thon on May 9, 2015 and it was a huge success. There was a large turnout of participants. Mr. Skenderis thanked everyone for a beautiful Easter this year.

VII. -Treasurer’s Report:

The treasurer, Mr. John Michaels, distributed the report annexed hereto as Schedule “C”. The attached report reflects the months May 2014-May 2015.

The community received many donations for pews, icons and ecclesiastical items, but financially, we are a little lower than we should be. We lost 3 rental incomes from the adjacent church properties. We have to work hard for a successful festival to help carry us financially through the year.

-Stewardship Update:

Father presented the stewardship update in his report.

VIII. Church Restoration:

The church restoration continues in full force. We are now painting. 90% of the windows have been replaced and/or restored as of now, including the stained glass. The iconography has been cleaned up, restored or replaced as a result of the damage sustained to the individual icon. The marble has been delivered. The floor in the choir loft was done. The Baby room is also almost complete. The LED lighting is complete and is an outstanding addition to the church.   The doors are African mahogany wood and are made of the best quality craftsmanship. Granite stone will be placed on the exterior perimeter of the church and the front platform is to be extended.   The bell free will be made new with new bells from Greece. The sound system and pews will be installed immediately after the floors are installed. Parishoners and outside supporters have already offered donations and now is the time to make all of the donations. In 10 months, everything should be complete. Mr. Bill Gatsiadis asked how much the renovation project cost. The answer is that the cost is not final, because there are still items that have not been delivered, such as the altar screen, several icons, ecclesiastical items and construction costs for updates, code upgrades and remaining repairs. The Town of Hempstead will submit the final list of needed upgrades and the iconographer will be negotiated for the inclusion of all icons that were destroyed due to the fire. There were additional costs that were incurred that were not covered by the insurance coverage; i.e. the elevator; the upgraded lighting (LED); the HVAC. The church basement, fire cleanup, architectural permits and initial renovations (artwork and remediation) had to be taken care off first. The renovation was a difficult project because it had to be completed with respect to the existing structure. The end of July, 2015, we anticipate the arrival of the container from Greece with all of the ecclesiastical items. We anticipate on August 15, 2015, to be almost done for the most important parts of the renovation… and hope to have the Panagias service in the new church.   There are small delays with the insurance but overall, everything looks good. Mrs. Peggy Matthews recommended that the ‘solea’ be extended outward and be larger. The President said it was a good idea and will ask the architect and contractor if it could be done, but it may be too late.

We have an amazing lawyer who will promote the permits through stages and we will be moving forward. The planning examiner is also moving at a good pace. The survey is completed and the application for the permit is filed. We will soon get a variance hearing and the Community Center should get started upon approval. The first floor of the church will be connected to the Community Center. The Community Center will be a gathering place for all ages in our community. The building will consist of offices with classrooms on one side of the Center and state of the art gymnasium, kitchen, recreation room, and, game room on the other side.

We are anticipating the kitchen to be ready for the festival baking. The festival will be advertised with posters, Cosmos FM radio, Athena FM radio, and placemats for diners. This year we are also distributing festival booklets with the history of the church as well as advertisements. Everyone MUST support the festival!!!!
